On the 26th of August, BABSOC/EISSOC hosted its first Careers Night of the year at the UNSW Roundhouse Club Bar, setting the scene for a relaxing as well as stimulating career-orientated evening. The focus of the night was all about where a science degree can take you. The background and professions of our panel of speakers was evidence enough of the varied pathways that a degree in science will let you embark upon. Our esteemed panel was composed of: Dr. Peter French: Science and Innovation Manager, Fermiscan Tania Notaras: Founder & Managing Director, Envirolab Services Dr. Louise Lutze-Mann: UNSW Academic Dr. Mathew Coleman: Credit Rates Derivative Trader, Commonwealth Bank Darren Vogrig: NSW Manager, CSIRO Education All our speakers proved to be exceptionally insightful and informative. They all drew upon their own unique professional experiences, discussed the practical reality of salary bases, workloads and science graduate interview dos and don’ts. They shared their inspirational personal achievements and did not fail to deliver in an outstanding, informative night. For the audience, the evening helped to broaden the concept of what it means to have a career as a science graduate. For the speakers, it was a great opportunity to share some of their expertise and to engage with a new generation of scientists; discussion groups of speakers and students lasted on the floor well after question time and the food was finished. The feedback from UNSW students was overwhelmingly positive. Students rated the event as very informative as speakers provided them with insights into the graduate attributes employers look for, interview tips and the variety of careers paths and options available for science graduates. Students commented that the speakers, “Challenged my perspectives of career in my field”, were passionate about science and “enthusiastic about what they were doing”.
We would like to extend a big thank you to our sponsors; Resmed, Crown Scientific and the Centre of Innovation and Entrepreneurship, for helping to make the night possible – and an even bigger thank you to our speakers, whose presence made the night. To all students who attended, thank you for supporting your societies as we strive to bring you a better, broader and much richer university experience. Where can science take you? The potential is limitless. The BABSOC/EISSOC Team |
